π Hi, I'm Jon
I'd like to be a guest on your podcast.
π§ I'm an experienced podcaster. I've co-created, edited and have been a regular voice on several long-running podcasts over the years. I have been a guest on a handful of shows too.
π» I have a great all-round sense of craft and storytelling. I have studied and taught media, made films (history, sports, shorts) and done intern stints at BBC local radio and the local paper. I have been making online content since the late 90s.
ποΈ I have a decent microphone and headphones. I've been around long enough to know about shouting "sync" down the line on a Skype call β and I'm comfortable recording on the likes of Riverside and Zencastr too. Will podcast live for drinks.
π£ I'm interested in speaking with you on a range of topics. I'm open to any fun offers, but most likely you'll want me to be on your show to talk about the items listed below.
Things I can talk about
- Guernsey, Channel Islands β with a specific line in World War II / Occupation history
- Running: I'll run, and talk about running, anything from 5km to ultras
- Birmingham, UK: I am interested in Birmingham identity and history β the more ephemeral the history the better
- Higher Education (universities) in the UK β especially how to stop working in academia and why you should do that
- Media education β what it is, why we need it, why it's always under attack
- The Hitchhikerβs Guide to the Galaxy (and I can bring a panel of four nerds with me if you need)
- Local news, especially independent local news / hyperlocal news in the UK (my main academic research area)
- Leading technical support teams for SaaS businesses (my day job)
- Self-publishing β books, podcasts and websites... I've done it all and my current job is helping people publish online
- Web history. Iβm "I started out on newsgroups" old, and I've seen some things in my time. Iβve even made some (small bits of) web history myself, like that time I started the world's first dedicated social media degree (and got my arse kicked by the Daily Mail and The Register)
- I will talk about almost any aspect of digital culture and 90s popular culture, which I can do as a fan, as a media academic, or as an aca-fan
Are we a match?
I donβt care how many episodes youβve made or how many listeners you have, I just want to share some thoughts with you and your listeners.
I used to be an academic, so I can do deep, dry and detailed, but I'll be happiest if we can have some fun with it. I'll match your intensity and, if you like to keep it clean, I won't swear. I fucking promise.
If I were to describe my style using keywords: cynical, dry, sarcastic, giddy.
Yes, I know, giddy and cynical feel a little bit at odds but get me enthused and I'll run away with it.
Hopefully, you've got a good sense of who I am and if we're a match before you contact me, but I'd love to listen to a recent episode of your show for a vibe check too.

Current work
I am currently developing a new podcast with Jon Bounds β a very specific take on sitcom histories.
I work at Ghost. We make publishing software for the web. I run the support team.
Tech and front matter
- UK-based, working from home, with full-fibre
- I use a Yeti Blue mic, arm-mounted, and Sony MDR headphones
- I can provide clean audio from my side of the call if recording over Zoom or other VoIP software
- Happy to work on video, but I prefer video to be private to the call
We can work out a specific bio and a nice byline pic that suits the project, but if you need something to get you started:
Jon works at Ghost, helping independent publishers grow and tell their stories. Previously, he was a media academic, with a particular interest in independent local news. He is getting slower at running, so he's making up for it by running longer and longer distances. Find out more at www.theplan.co.uk
Let's go!
If you'd like to work together, please email jon@theplan.co.uk with a Calendly link if you have one. If not, I can send you one so we can work across timezones and avoid calendar clashes.
Please give me a brief pitch on how I can help/what you'd like us to do together, and a link to your show so I can take a listen.
I am looking forward to meeting you!
I stole the idea for this page β including the very first line, word for word β from my pal, Mark Steadman. Well, I changed one word. Obviously.
